Feels Something Like Summertime
Considering it's been so nice outside lately I figured I take this week's post to emphasize how ready for summer I am! I can't wait for summer, hanging out with friends, driving around with the windows down, and just having a good time in general. For me they are certain songs that remind me of summertime. One song in particular is Lost Highway by Bon Jovi. I love to ride around jamming out to this song. Lost Highway is the title track off of the band's 2007 album Lost Highway. Lost Highway has a country music theme to it. As previously mentioned, Bon Jovi at the time was the only rock band to win a country music award. This entire album was written by situations going on in the personal life of lead guitarist Richie Sambora. The album talks about finding your way. During the couple years leading up to the album, Sambora had gone through a very rough span in his life. His wife divorced him and his dad died. Both of these events happened in the same year. Both of these events also took huge mental tolls on Sambora resulting in him becoming a heavy, heavy drinker. Jon Bon Jovi saw his friend deteriorating, so when the band came together to write what would eventually become Lost Highway Jon wrote about Richie. Most of the songs on the album talk about accepting outcomes you can't change and getting on living your life happily. Richie eventually realized the album was about him and as a result Richie moved on with his life. Lost Highway for me has personal meaning. It says that in some cases you can't always dwell in the past. Living in the past means that one can't live in the present. To me Bon Jovi is such a great band because they are able to make real world connections with their songs. That's what sets them apart from all other bands.

It's easy to say and sometimes difficult to do, but letting the past be a guide of what to or not to do in the present and future is often the only way to use the past to move forward.
